Reception & Year 1 - Maenporth, Gyllyngvase & Swanpool

This year we are running a combined Reception and Year 1 unit which will blend the play-based, child-led ethos of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) with the structured curriculum requirements of Year 1. We will provide a carefully planned continuous provision environment that offers clear developmental progression, allowing children to practice skills independently while adults lead targeted focus groups.

The unit will consist of three classrooms and an outdoor provision supported by a team of highly skilled practitioners.

Curriculum

We have adapted the curriculum for a mixed Reception and Year 1 cohort by mapping the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework directly alongside the Key Stage 1 (KS1) National Curriculum to find natural thematic and skill-based crossovers.

Reading Spine

We have created a reading spine for our mixed Reception/Year 1 continuous provision unit. We have carefully chosen a selection of picture books, which gives us a single foundational text that both year groups can explore.

Reading & Read Write Inc

We teach our children to read through a scheme called RWI. RWI relies on a strict ‘stage not age’ ability grouping system, where children from all year groups are completely mixed and allocated to different groups across the school based on their half-termly phonics assessments.

Reading at Home

It is an expectation that you read at home with your child 5 times a week.

In Reception this could look like:

·         Reading their book bag book

·         Reviewing sounds from their RWI sound book

·         Blending strip (these will be stuck in their reading record once they know the first 10 sounds)

·         Watching RWI teaching videos sent via Tapestry

·         Reviewing red words that will be in the front of their reading record

In Year 1 this could look like:

·         Reading their book bag book

·         Reviewing sounds from their RWI book

·         Watching RWI teaching videos accessed via the QR codes given

Outdoor Learning

Our children get to explore our outdoor provision and access Forest School on a regular basis. As a result, we ask that at the beginning of the school year you provide your child with a set of waterproofs and wellies (all labelled). We will keep these stored on your child’s peg.

Eating & Drinking

Water

Please provide your child with a labelled water bottle each day.

Milk

We are part of the Cool Milk Scheme which delivers fresh, chilled cartons of milk to our classrooms.

Eligibility:

  • FREE for children under the age of five
  • FREE to children receiving or entitled to statutory free school meals*
  • Subsidised for all other children in primary education

Snack

A fruit snack is given to all children and is managed through the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme (SFVS), a government initiative that provides a free piece of fresh fruit or vegetable every school day to all children aged 4 to 6.

Lunch

All pupils in Reception and KS1 are entitled to a free school lunch. These need to be booked online in advance.

If they prefer, your child may bring a packed lunch from home.

Big Brush Club

We believe in teaching children the importance of brushing their teeth from a young age, as this helps to build good habits that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Big Brush Club is a supervised toothbrushing scheme funded by the NHS, being delivered to early years settings across the Southwest.
