Intent
At Penryn Primary, we aim to develop an interest in learning other languages. We introduce children to French in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating, to stimulate the children’s curiosity about language. We want children to have an understanding of different cultures and to develop awareness of cultural differences in other countries to our own. We aim to encourage and develop children’s confidence and to prepare them to continue their learning in KS3. We ensure that children have opportunities to practice and develop the 4 areas of language learning – speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as encouraging an intercultural understanding through exposure to stories, songs, poems and rhymes.
Curriculum
At Penryn, we follow the KS2 scheme of work developed by Twinkl. This scheme follows the National Curriculum for MFL in KS2. The teaching provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. It enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary. The focus of study in modern languages will be on practical communication, speaking in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures. Children are encouraged to develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases.
EYFS and Key Stage 1
The learning of a modern foreign language is non-statutory. Children will enjoy becoming familiar with different languages and the focus will be on listening and speaking activities. Children will develop their cultural understanding of people from different countries and how their traditions and customs are similar or different to their own.
Key Stage 2
Lessons and activities will include:
-
Providing opportunities in each lesson for pupils to use and practise what they have learned.
-
Language games to enhance motivation and engagement.
-
Learning songs, rhymes and stories.
-
Focus on grammatical structures and phonology.
-
Pair work and group work.
-
Use of authentic materials.
-
Use of ICT where relevant.
-
Written activities to reinforce learning.
Lessons will be interactive and will provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. The focus will be on practical communication. Lessons should enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.
