At the start of each academic year, one child from each class in Years 1-6 is elected to form the new School Council. The School Council aim to meet at least once each term. During these meetings, they discuss fundraising events and think of ways to improve the school. Following the meetings, they hold class council meetings to discuss ideas and share information with their classes. They will also discuss a question and feedback some of the answers during the next school council meeting.
The School Council helps to imbed the fundamental British Values and supports pupils in becoming well-rounded individuals who understand democracy and respect others’ opinions. From the beginning when the School Council is elected, the children are encouraged to think about democracy and why they should be voted by their peers to represent their class. During school council meetings, if a decision needs to be made, each member of the school council has a vote and children learn about democracy where each child has a voice and each child has a vote but the majority vote will form the overall decision. Within class and school council meetings, children learn that different people can have different viewpoints, and it is important to respect others’ views and opinions, even though they may differ from our own.
Here are a few things that the School Council have been busy with recently.
The School Council have chosen a charity to support in the last two academic years through a democratic vote. Last year, they chose to raise money for the RNLI and planned a day for children to come into school wearing beach clothes and filled wellies with donations. This was very successful and they raised £182.24. Each class also had fun designing new outfits for the RNLI.
The children planned to create Imagination Stations to be used in the Year 3/4 playground and the Infant playground. They planned a bake sale to raise money to purchase the equipment. The children have enjoyed using these at lunchtimes.
This year, the School Council has voted to raise money to support The Flicka Foundation. They are busy planning a fundraising event later this year.
The School Council also plan annual fundraising events to raise money for Christmas Jumper Day and BBC Children in Need. Time is spent in classes to support children in understanding how these charities help others.
